Interesting article on fox.com today http://www.foxbusiness.com/technology/2011/03/25/surging-groupon-faces-intense-competition/?test=faces Speaks to the success of groupon, but ultimately how much downmarket pressure they are facing. From an employment perspective, having Groupon on your resume right now carries a lot of cache as the “deal a day” space looks to have long term viability from a business perspective. If I was in Chicago I would make it my full time job to get into Groupon if I was in sales, marketing, anything online. I don’t think Groupon is as prestigious as having Facebook on your resume or Google, but it definitely is at the top of the next tier of internet plays.

Keep in mind if you work there, however, that in 1997 there were lots of other first generation companies about, see Friendster, Pets.com, Dr. Koop.com, that now are nowhere to be found. Get cash compensation too, don’t give it all up for options!

Interesting article today in Slate, http://www.slate.com/id/2289087/

Groupon is one of the fastest growing internet companies of all time, and has quadrupled the size of its staff in the past year alone. That being said, have seen numerous articles like this one including one in the new york times detailing complaints among participating merchants and wait staffs at bars and restaurants that offer groupon deals.

Groupon remains one of the “it” companies that our candidates tell us they want to work for, and the company is by all accounts well run and treats its employees well. These articles demonstrate that even the best run companies have challenges in the marketplace.

I see it all the time as a recruiter, individuals who overstate their value to their current company. I deal with Vice Presidents of Marketing who think their company’s inventory would cease to move if they weren’t there to properly position them in the market place. I deal with sales executives who become prima donnas, walking the tight rope between necessary evil and expendable.

Charlie Sheen’s meltdown is no different in many ways. He was a top producing employee, a driver of a significant chunk of revenue, and a face of his organization. Over time, however, he began to lose focus, create negative press for his company, and then at the worst possible time, he became even more demanding.

His employer treated him no differently than most America companies handle their own high maintenance employees: they show them the door. Whatever your role, remember that to some degree you are expendable. In most cases, the company was successful before you, other people have thrived in a similar role, and there are often younger, cheaper people waiting to take your place.

If you look in the mirror and see Charlie Sheen staring back at you, it isn’t too late to salvage your position. The first thing you need to do is talk to your boss and let them know you appreciate your job and admit that you may have been a bit difficult to deal with in recent weeks(years). Secondly, offer to do something selfless for the team or the organization. Mentor a new employee, speak to the group about new technologies, give up your prime parking space for a week.

If Charlie Sheen walked into Chuck Lorre, the executive producer of Two and A Half Men’s office and apologized as Alec Baldwin recently suggested, he might turn things around. If he admitted the error of his ways, there is a chance he could salvage his job and the job of the other actors on the show. Similarly, if you are a corporate prima donna, it might not be too late for you either!

If I had one thing I could suggest to all job seekers it would be to think like a marketer. Does your job strategy consist of reading postings on Monster, The Ladders or even Indeed? What have you done today to advance your career? Does your resume tell an audience why you are a winner? If I read your cover letter can I tell while you are special? According to the most recent government statistics there are more than EIGHT job seekers for every position. What are you doing to beat out those other seven people. Whether it is a razor sharp cover letter, asking your boss what you could do for him that would make you stand out, or finding five new linked in groups to join today, think about doing something that is ACTION oriented. Waiting for that dream job to show up online and sending your resume in is no different than putting a dollar down and purchasing a lottery ticket!

Several recent articles have cited that current unemployment levels are at 15% or higher for those without a 4 year degree, but under 6% for those with a four year degree. At HES we work on a variety of positions ranging from front line sales all the way to CEO/CFO engagements. This year we have had a very solid steady year as most of our clients are in the information/interactive space and are looking for that 4 year degree type person. Along the way I have read dozens of articles, however, about how companies are learning to be “hyper-productive” and that we won’t see large scale hiring or hiring of more semi-skilled workers like we did mid-decade which would help lower the unemployment rate significantly. My take away is that we are heading into a duality which doesn’t bode well for the overall country.

Is the glass half full or half empty? Have we bottomed out or is there more pain to come? Today, the weekly new jobless claims numbers are out, and they are down again. For every piece of good news, however, another economist gives a contrarian viewpoint.

What do we see in the recruiting business? A very healthy uptick in the number of companies looking to hire basis of fourth quarter search activity. Most companies that could cut headcount did so in the first 2/3 of this year, and now they need to position themselves for growth in 2010.

What positions/markets are seeing the most activity?

1) sales, account executives, account management

2) SEO/SEM, online marketing professionals

In terms of industry, healthcare and mobile/online media seemed poised for continued growth in 2010.

Hawthorne Executive Search is seeing a rather dramatic uptick in client search activity in the 4th quarter. Sectors such as interactive media, e-commerce, retail/etail and healthcare are experiencing a turnaround from the duldrums we experienced earlier in the year.

While the ten of us are but a small reflection of the greater economy, this does bode well for sentiment that hiring will increase in the new year

On a different matter, have had 2 dramatically different experiences with two separate client companies in the past few months. Client “A” wound up hiring an individual several months after we submitted him, forgetting that he came from us. We found out several months later, and the client couldn’t have been nicer. They apologized, and paid our invoice immediately. A class act, and a company I feel even better sending in candidates too, knowing that if they treat us this ethically, that I would feel comfortable sending a candidate in.

Client “B” on the other hand, contracted us for several searches, each of which we filled with candidates they were excited about. After we invoiced them, they tried to claim that EVERY ONE of the candidates was a referral of theirs and not submitted by us, even though we had documentation. They proceeded to make collection difficult and gave us headaches we had never experienced in fifteen years in the business.

It just shows that it is people who run companies. Both are privately held, same size, and ultimately the people at company A live by the golden rule, while the people at company B do not.

It is my belief that company A will prosper and thrive while company B will continue to be plagued by high turnover rates.

If we all treat people the way we would want to be treated, business would be more pleasurable for all of us!

Okay, I will tell you what most people won’t: the job market is bad, and the types of jobs/salaries/benefits you are used to won’t be coming back for a long time. Yes, some companies are hiring, but they are scaling back what they are paying for those jobs, cutting matches on 401k plans, reducing year end bonuses and increasing the responsibility for those positions. If you are in sales, you are fortunate in a sense that many companies are still looking to add to staff, but the days of company cars 50-60k base salaries for front line sales jobs are gone for the forseeable future. What we have instead are low bases or draw versus commission with higher upside. Companies are willing to “pay for performance” but they are not going to take a risk on base salaries when they don’t have to in this economy. For the sales person, at least there is work. The number of client services, marketing, IT, human resources and other positions we have seen are down dramatically from 2008 and we do not see any “green shoots” for the second half of the year.
If you are waiting for relocation packages, sign on bonuses, and base salaries from 2008, you may need to keep waiting.
My advice to you is to grab on to something that pays your bills, keeps your skills fresh, and to continue to keep your eyes open.
Very few employers will look down there noses two years from now if you took a step back in your career to put food on the table for your family. The economy is THAT bad, and those that deal with small, medium and large businesses across the country know that.
