Interesting article on fox.com today http://www.foxbusiness.com/technology/2011/03/25/surging-groupon-faces-intense-competition/?test=faces Speaks to the success of groupon, but ultimately how much downmarket pressure they are facing. From an employment perspective, having Groupon on your resume right now carries a lot of cache as the “deal a day” space looks to have long term viability from a business perspective. If I was in Chicago I would make it my full time job to get into Groupon if I was in sales, marketing, anything online. I don’t think Groupon is as prestigious as having Facebook on your resume or Google, but it definitely is at the top of the next tier of internet plays.
Keep in mind if you work there, however, that in 1997 there were lots of other first generation companies about, see Friendster, Pets.com, Dr. Koop.com, that now are nowhere to be found. Get cash compensation too, don’t give it all up for options!
